Down at the Mines - Part 1

The mining scenes for Thor's Hammer were shot at the ruins of the Mesa Motorola plant, global symbol of corporate oppression.  These were taken on the final day of shooting.

Keith digging as an extra at the Motorola ruins.  And thanks to Eric, he finally got that promotion at Motorola!

Some years back my husband,  Keith, worked in the clean rooms of this very Motorola plant.  He hated the place, along with the blatant corporate propaganda they would play on the plant radio.

Strangely enough, these radio announcements were voiced for many years by Debbie, one of the extras in Thor's Hammer!

A lot more of the Motorola plant still remains to be trashed.

Get your credits today!  Just like in the movie....

You had to watch where you walked, as a lot of the plant was underground and what seemed to be solid ground was in fact full of treacherous holes.

Just like a real corporation....

Sara wields the pickaxe of triumph.  Or is it oppression?  Or maybe the triumph of oppression?

Sara was out to greet the cast  as they arrived on the set at 8 a.m. Sunday morning.  Why is she so horribly cheerful?  What is her problem?

First things first:  Craft services!

James inspects the goods.

Setting up the tents that will shelter the extras while they wait between takes.

The vehicle in the background is running a generator to power some of the equipment used.

The crew have been on the set a couple of hours already and the sun is warming up.  It will get to be at least 105º F (40.5º C) on this fine day.

Things are starting to liven up at crafts services.

The extras wait under the tents for their next scenes.

Lewis was particularly fond of the Fruit by the Mile candy that was available for snacking.

As things heat up, the sound crew takes refuge in whatever shade they can find.

In the background other crew work to set up the next scene beneath a glaring sun.

Here are Matt, camera loader, with Paul the PA and Daniel, best boy electrician.

Mad dogs and Englishmen, out in the noonday sun....  Well, it's actually still morning here.  That's Noah below.

The camera crew, but sadly minus Tom, because the night before he got sideswiped by one of Country Kitchen's strains of Salmonella.

Don't forget to check out Tom's photos of Thor's Hammer!

The 35mm camera we would all  like to have some day....

Why are Fabré and her daughter so happy?

Because they're doing makeup and therefore get to hang in the air-conditioned trailer!

Rick (of The Locksmith fame) relaxes in one of the "director" chairs under the extras tent as he awaits his next scene.

He has decided he likes the chair so much that he's going to be a director when he grows up, hopefully in the next few years....

Michael clowns around in the shade.  Unless you caught him sobbing as an extra, he was always in a great mood!

Mr. Jackson  -- Nadine's hubbie whose name I don't know! --  as he leaves the set to tend to their brand new baby.  He played Man in Shadows 1!

This brave fellow was one of Thor's Hammer's security thugs and had to look foreboding in a black suit, as miners trudged past.  I'm glad I was a miner and not a suit!

James again!  It's almost lunch time and the natives are getting restless!

And for the rest of our tour....
