At CJS Studios

CJS Studios, by 103rd Avenue and McDowell, is a huge place, with many large studios like the one show below.  They also have an impressive Old West area and carriages and a buttload more!

Update:  CJS Studios is now run by new people and goes by the name Hollywood-Phoenix Studios.

C. J. Smith, who owns the place, was a really nice guy who, in a few minutes of chatting, gave us the strong impression of strongly supporting film and students films in Arizona.

We were mercifully out of the sun but the lights made up for that in the large metal box that was Studio 3.  Some say  it was around 120º F (~49º C).

Studio 3 at CJS Studios.  The temperature that day was around 105º F (40.5º C), which isn't too bad for the Sonoran desert in mid-June.

The shoot this day was of crowd scenes, with extras like us  enthusiastically cheering and jumping up and down, waving flags.

This is Mary, of the fan dance, the woman to whom we owe much!

Between takes, she and other crew members brought us countless bottles of ice-cold water.  Mary also rolled about a giant fan so that it would blow across the extras, as we tried to fan ourselves with ineffectual, floppy paper flags.

Towie, casting director.  To get more last-minute extras the night before, she stood outside a Harkins Theatre and nabbed unsuspecting movie goers!

Ever peppy, she pitched in as an extra in the crowd scenes, as did many other crew members.  Among other things, Towie also worked craft services at "the mines."

Nadine Jackson, makeup artist extraordinaire!  Here she is inside Studio 1.  You can see one of the CJS Studio carriages in the background.

When she wasn't doing makeup, Nadine helped out as an extra and even brought along her tiny baby, who slept peacefully through the whole thing!

Nadine is also an actor and model you can check out her website here!

Paul, one of the PAs of Thor's Hammer.  Here he is hauling  bags of garbage, which would accumulate at a fantastic rate.

Stay tuned for news of Paul's film company Plorianh (yes, that's a silent H at the end).  He likes to shoot digital.

Another one of the PAs of Thor's Hammer.  She told me her name several times and I can't remember it!  She would like to be a 1st AD.

Noah, another one of the many PAs working their butts off!

Daniel (also known as the Red Guy), brother of Nick the PA.  Daniel got dragged into playing an extra, which he didn't like half as much as being on the crew, where he worked the rest of the time.

Paul again, in front of one of the studios.

Adam and Heather, the leads of Thor's Hammer, at the end of the day.

Heather's job was to incite the crowd during the day's shoot and she did a lot of shouting in a hot warehouse.

Raj worked as one of the extras in the crowd.  He was a lot of fun to be around, even as he baked in the long-sleeved shirt!

Debbie played one of the  extras.  She is a character actor who also does voiceovers.

Oddly enough, she used to do radio voiceovers for the Mesa  Motorola plant, where the mining sequences for Thor's Hammer were shot.

She still remembers the blatant corporate propaganda she had to spout, which was very similar to some of the slogans used in the posters for this movie.

Michael, who was once turned down to play a rock star just  because he couldn't sing.  He's  waiting for his big break!

Another yet undiscovered extra!
